Classical Guitar Composition Project

A Joint Venture of Canberra Classical Guitar Society and Wesley Music Foundation

Canberra Classical Guitar Society and the Wesley Music Foundation are collaborating to raise funds for a project to commission two works for four-part guitar orchestra by two young aspiring composers in the Canberra region and to increase the repertoire of music for guitar orchestra and specifically for the Canberra Classical Guitar Society orchestra.

It is planned to pay $1,500 for each of two works and therefore the target for fund raising is $3,000. The actual commitment to commission the works is dependent on the fundraising success.

Information and brochures on the project together with forms for donations or pledges are available from the Society on 0403 640 669 or email info@classicalguitarcanberra.org.au or from the Wesley Music Centre on 02 6232 7248 or email wesleymc@bigpond.net.au.

In 2009, Canberra Youth Music (CYM) was awarded a three year grant from ACTEW
to produce a youth music festival to focus on two main objectives: a) highlighting the
depth and quality of experiences for young musicians and b) establishing new
musical opportunities for young musicians in Canberra. The name of this festival is
the Resonate Festival.

The theme of the first ever Resonate Festival will be orchestral tango music and will
take place on 5 – 7 November 2010. To support the festival, CYM will be bringing to
Canberra some of the world’s brightest tango musicians and educators. Ignacio
Varchausky (double bass) and Santiago Polimeni (bandoneon), from the Orquesta
Escuela de Tango Emilio Balcarce in Buenos Aires, will be the festival’s featured
guest artists and they will be supported by Maggie Ferguson, Australia’s leading
tango expert.

The guest artists will work with Canberra schools and the CYM string stream in
addition to forming and performing with the Resonate Festival Tango Orchestra
which will be open to young musicians AMEB Grade 5 and above in the following
instruments: violin, viola, cello, double bass, clarinet and flute. Application forms will
be sent out soon.

Further to this, every CYM ensemble will give a performance over the three days of
the festival and CYM and Ainslie Arts Centre will throw open its doors to the
Canberra public so that they can see the excellent work that CYM conductors, tutors
and members do every single week.
